Exploring Degree Types And Accreditation

To work in this field, you’ll likely need to become a certified accountant in addition to having a bachelor’s degree. A standard bachelor degree program consists of 120 credits, and to sit for the certification exam you need at least 150 credits. Some undergraduate accounting programs offer a five-year degree that include the required number and type of courses. Other bachelor’s programs make it easy for students to continue their studies at the same university to earn a Master’s in Accounting degree, which will also qualify you to take an accounting certification exam.

Accounting degree programs are usually offered in one of these four formats:

  • BS in Accounting – an accounting degree that primarily focuses on developing skills applicable to this field like auditing, taxation, and finances
  • BA in Accounting – an accounting degree that requires foreign language courses, provides a broad liberal arts foundation, and develops skills applicable to this field like auditing, taxation, and finances
  • BBA in Accounting – a business degree that focuses primarily on developing business administration skills with an accounting concentration
  • BSBA in Accounting – a broad business degree with a concentration in accounting, typically with more of a focus on math and technical skills than a BBA

Accreditation is important for all degrees, ensuring you receive a qualified education. The accrediting bodies featured in our list are:

  • CIHE – Commission on Institutions of Higher Education
